We also donated quilts to St Kitts after Hurricane George. Plus we recently donated three quilts to the Chemotherapy unit at The Trillium Heath Centre.
The comfort quilt program was started in 1989 when 12 members made 16 baby quilts and donated them to Ernestine's Shelter. The comfort quilt program is run by two dedicated guild members, who serve a one year term They sort the fabric into bundles suitable for one quilt. The members collect their bundles at the monthly meetings and take them home to create the quilt tops. Other members help by cutting fabric, layering the quilts and doing the actual quilting and binding. The coordinators for the year starting Sept 2003 are Margaret Robb and Denise Rainville. Occasionally we will have a quilting "bee" in studio C at Neilson Park Creative Centre. At these times many of the members will work for a whole day or an evening, producing quilts. Here we are in studio C at Neilson Park Creative Centre, sorting the finished quilts and preparing them for delivery to the various agencies we support. Much of the fabric for the quilts is donated by Northcott Silk Co Ltd. Guild members and the local public also donate fabric. We are always happy to receive donations of cotton fabric, batting, sewing threads and embroidery thread and yarn suitable for baby shawls and clothes. Since September, 2002, 167 quilts have been shared among various agencies. Quilt For The Cure, or as its now known, The Quilt, is a yearly fund raising event to raise money for Breast Cancer. Our guild has continuously supported this wonderful event with member donated quilts, a very special group quilt and by working at Casa Loma, where the quilts are displayed prior to auction. Some of the quilts made by our members for last year's show. To find out more about "The Quilt" Breast Cancer fundraising project, please visit www.thequilt.com. We have also supported many other charities with donations of special quilts for auctions and raffles, with special Christmas baskets and, in 2001, we made over 300 wheelchair bags out of heavy upholstery fabric for Toronto Social Services.
