Learn to Quilt 1 – The Beginners’ Quilting Classes

Create your first quilt with The Etobicoke Quilters’ Guild and discover why our members love to quilt! Learn how to cut, sew, quilt and bind a small quilt in this fun 8 week course. Students bring their own fabrics for this project and may use the guild’s rotary cutting tools during class time. Students must be able to bring their own sewing machines to class. Adele Gataveckas is a very experienced and skilled quilter and teacher, and has instilled a love of quilting to many of us who came to the guild as beginners. Many of us have gone on to take all 4 levels in her Learn to Quilt series!

Prerequisite: Ability to use a sewing machine is required.

Learn to Quilt 2

Build on the skills taught in Learn to Quilt 1 and gain confidence in your piecing abilities while creating this spin on a traditional sampler quilt top. You will learn all the basic piecing units needed to build blocks as well as play with the colour and value of your fabrics. You will explore the idea of a random block setting for your quilt and practice working intuitively. Your quilt will be a unique reflection of your own likes and choices. Students must have their own sewing machines and rotary cutting equipment for both in class and at home use.

Prerequisite: Learn to Quilt 1 or Learn to Quilt – Cut and Sew or previous quilting and rotary cutting experience.

Learn to Quilt 3

Some quilting techniques may feel too challenging to tackle on your own. This 5 session evening class will take the mystery and stress out of techniques such as curved piecing, y-seams, diamonds, hexagons and log cabin blocks. There is no project to complete so bring fabrics you have on hand and enjoy adding to your quilting skill set!

Prerequisite: Learn to Quilt 2 or previous quilting and rotary cutting experience.

Learn to Quilt 4

Explore quilt design and develop your problem solving skills as you learn to add a series of borders around a central block. You will learn the correct way to add butted, pieced and mitred borders to your quilts and learn how to choose the best style and size of borders for your design.

Prerequisites: Previous quilting and rotary cutting experience.

Cancellation policy for workshops and classes:
We understand that sometimes people who have registered for a workshop find they are unable to take it. If there are enough people to cover the costs of the workshop and the guild isn’t losing money, a registrant can get a refund if they have to cancel. The amount refunded will be the full amount they paid, minus a $5 processing fee. If there aren’t enough people to cover the costs without their registration, they can transfer their registration to someone else, but they cannot get a refund. Usually, it has been possible to give refunds because our members have responded enthusiastically to workshops, but it can’t be guaranteed.

If the guild has to cancel a workshop or class for any reason, people who have registered will be refunded the full amount they paid. (No processing fee will be deducted.)

Applications for a refund will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
