Learn to Quilt – Cut and Sew with Adele Gataveckas
Adele Gataveckas is a very experienced and skilled quilter and teacher, and has instilled a love of quilting in many of us who came to the guild as beginners. Many of us have gone on to take all 4 levels in her Learn to Quilt series! Here, she has created another entry point to join her workshops in exploring the world of quilting.
Spend an afternoon brushing up on your rotary cutting and machine piecing skills before going on to take other quilting classes or workshops. Students will cut and piece a 12” block while focusing on proper technique and safety. Layering, basting and quilting will be demonstrated.
Prerequisite: No previous experience needed.

Learn to Quilt 1 – The Beginners’ Quilting Course
Create your first quilt with The Etobicoke Quilters’ Guild and discover why our members love to quilt! Learn how to cut, sew, quilt and bind a small quilt in this fun 8 week course.
There is no need to purchase tools, students will use the guild’s cutting equipment. You may purchase your own fabrics or buy a fabric kit from the guild for $15 (fabrics not as shown). We recommend that you bring your own sewing machine to class but if this is not possible, there are a limited number of machines available to rent for in class use only. No previous sewing experience is necessary!

Learn to Quilt 2
Build on the skills taught in Learn to Quilt 1 and gain confidence in your piecing abilities while creating this spin on a traditional sampler quilt top. In this 6 session course you will learn all the basic piecing units needed to build blocks as well as play with the colour and value of your fabrics. You will explore the idea of a random block setting for your quilt and practice working intuitively. Your quilt will be a unique reflection of your own likes and choices. Students must have their own sewing machines and rotary cutting equipment for both in class and at home use.

Prerequisite: Learn to Quilt 1 or Learn to Quilt – Cut and Sew or previous quilting experience.

Learn to Quilt 3
Some quilting techniques may feel too challenging to tackle on your own. This 5 session evening class will take the mystery and stress out of techniques such as curved piecing, y-seams, partial seams, diamonds, hexagons and log cabin blocks. There is no project to complete so bring fabrics you have on hand and enjoy adding to your quilting skill set!

Learn to Quilt 4
Explore quilt design and develop your problem solving skills as you learn to add a series of borders around a central block. In this 6 session course you will learn the correct way to add butted, pieced and mitred borders to your quilts and learn how to choose the best style and size of borders for your design. You will learn how to estimate the yardages needed for purchasing fabric. You can choose to make the sample quilt, Modern Basket Medallion, or work on designing your own medallion quilt.
Prerequisites: Previous quilting experience.
